Fresh Flower Care

 

YouFloral receives fresh flowers daily, directly from our partner farms all over the world.  Every stem goes through intensive quality control inspections to ensure freshness and health, and all our bouquets are professionally hand tied to ensure they are ready to be arranged and enjoyed by you or your recipient.  

 

Our fresh flowers are shipped to you in 'bud' form so you can watch them open and enjoy them as long as possible.  It's possible that some of the flowers might look a bit tired on arrival, but don't despair, they are healthy and simply need water to re-hydrate (this may take a few hours).  Please follow the care tips below to achieve the best results from your fresh cut flowers. 

 

When you receive flowers from YouFloral:

 

  1. Fill a clean vase or other container with warm water.  Add the packet of floral preservative and stir thoroughly.
  2. Carefully remove the flowers from the packaging.
  3. Cut the stems of your flowers to fit your vase.  To do so, hold the stems under water and cut about 1 inch off each stem with a sharp knife or sturdy shears.  Remove the leaves as they may decay under water. 
  4. Display your flowers in a cool area out of direct sunlight and drafts.  Do not display your flowers on top of or next to a television or computer.
  5. Check your water level daily and refill when necessary.

Check your flowers daily

Keep your vase filled with fresh water - keeping the level high to promote long lasting flowers.  Be sure no debris is floating in the water (such as leaves and stem parts) as this could promote the growth of bacteria which can shorten a flower's life.

 

Re-cut your stems

Every few days, remove your flowers from the vase and re-cut the stems. Remove 1/2" to 3/4” inch from the bottom of the stem and be sure to cut the stem at an angle to allow the flower the best chance to take up water.  Use a sharp knife or sharp floral cutter or scissor.  Avoid smashing or piercing the stems, as this can destroy the water vessels in the stem and prevent water absorption.  Remove any spent or damaged blooms or foliage that falls below the waterline in the vase.

To avoid changing the stem placements in a vase arrangement, tie the stems with twine just above the vase’s edge before taking them out of their vase.  Hold the tied arrangement at the twine-bound point to re-cut the stems.  Then place them back into the clean vase with the fresh water and a flower food.

 

Change your water, and add additional fresh flower food

Be sure to clean the vase before refilling it with room-temperature water mixed with the proper amount of fresh flower food.  Flower food contains the correct ingredients to properly nourish the flowers, keep bacteria at bay (which can block the stems and prevent them from absorbing water), encourage buds to open, and lengthen the life of the bouquet.  It’s one of the best - and easiest - ways to extend the life of your flowers, but be sure to follow the directions on the package correctly as improperly mixed flower food can actually do more harm than good.

 

Display your flowers in a cool spot

Most flowers prefer temperatures between 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit (18 to 22 degrees Celsius) and are best displayed away from direct sunlight or heating or cooling vents.  Also, don't place directly under ceiling fans, or on top of televisions or radiators, which give off heat and can cause flowers to dehydrate.  And avoid placing your flowers near ripening fruit, which releases tiny amounts of ethylene gas that can age them prematurely.
